Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) staff are updating the Boyd Lake State Park Management Plan. Boyd Lake State Park has been operating under its 1997 Park Management Plan. This new Management Plan will build upon past plans and serve as an overarching management guide for the park by outlining short- and long-term visitor, recreation, resource, and infrastructure management visions for the park. It will chart the management priorities and specific management directions for current and future park staff.

State Park Management Plans are intended to:

• Serve as a point of reference for current and future park staff, other partnering agencies, elected officials, and interested members of the public.

• Help inform future use and development and visitor recreation experiences.
  

• Guide management of existing natural and cultural resources.

• Provide a framework for monitoring and maintaining state park resources.

• Identify park enhancement opportunities, including possible facility upgrades, new park facilities, restoration and rehabilitation projects, and other important management initiatives.

• Help inform future budget allocations and annual funding requests.

Boyd Lake State Park Description

Boyd Lake State Park is located in Larimer County on the eastern edge of the City of Loveland. The park is a popular recreation destination, especially for people from the northern Front Range and the Denver metropolitan area. The major activities at the park are boating, swimming, picnicking, fishing, camping, biking, and jogging. Visitation has increased steadily over the past decade, with over 570,000 visitors to the park in 2025. The main recreation season runs from mid-May through mid-October.

Boyd Lake State Park consists of about 321 acres of upland, wetland, and riparian areas along the western shore of the lake. The lake itself, the park’s primary draw for visitors, encompasses 1,747 acres when it is full. The land along the rest of the lake’s shoreline is privately owned. The main part of the park (which includes the campground, swim beach, marina, and other facilities) operates under the terms of a perpetual recreational easement purchased in 1978 by State Parks from the Greeley-Loveland Irrigation Company, which owns the land under the reservoir as well as the water in the reservoir.

• Share information about the planning process and how to get involved.

• Share preliminary results from this summer’s boating capacity survey.

• Share and gather feedback on draft management strategies related to boating access.

Additionally, we are currently seeking feedback via our Boating Capacity Survey to inform the management plan. The survey includes questions about your valued activities, experiences with crowding, and other boating-specific topics. All responses are completely anonymous. If you have visited the park within the last six months, your participation will help us ensure we are managing Boyd Lake to support the best visitor experience possible.
